PADI Open Water Komodo Course Structure
The PADI Open Water Komodo Course is designed to make learning to dive both enjoyable and effective, combining theory, practice, and real adventure in one unforgettable experience. Your course is divided into three key parts:
- Online Self-Study — Learn the fundamental principles of scuba diving at your own pace through PADI’s digital learning platform.
- Confined Water Sessions — Practice essential diving skills in a controlled, shallow-water environment before heading into the ocean.
- Open Water Dives — Put your new skills into action and explore the breathtaking underwater world of Komodo National Park.
At Legend Diving Komodo, we’re passionate about both diving and environmental responsibility — that’s why our training is completely paperless. From sign-up to theory lessons, everything is done digitally. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive full access to the PADI eLearning materials, allowing you to study from your own device — anytime, anywhere.
Course Schedule
The PADI Open Water Komodo course typically takes 3 days to complete. To ensure a smooth start, we require all students to finish at least Sections 1–3 of the online theory before arriving at the dive center.
When you arrive at Legend Diving Komodo, you’ll be greeted with a warm smile and a fresh cup of coffee to start your adventure right. Your PADI Instructor will begin by reviewing your self-study progress and the online forms you completed prior to arrival.
This is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions or share any concerns you might have had during your online learning. A short recap will ensure that you’ve fully understood the core concepts of scuba diving before moving on to the fun, hands-on part.
Next, we’ll bring the theory to life with your first confined water session. Before getting there, your instructor will introduce you to all the scuba equipment you’ll be using — explaining its functions, showing you how to assemble it, and guiding you through a quick dry run to get comfortable with how everything works together.
Once you’re confident, we’ll head to the confined water training area, where your instructor will demonstrate key scuba skills for you to practice, including safe entry and exit techniques, mask clearing, buoyancy control, and essential safety procedures.
These foundational exercises will give you the confidence and ability you need to take the next exciting step — your PADI Open Water dives in Komodo’s incredible ocean environment.
The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived — it’s time to dive into the open ocean and experience the magic of Komodo scuba diving! Before departure, your instructor will conduct a detailed dive briefing, covering the day’s Komodo dive sites, marine life you may encounter, and the essential skills you’ll be practicing underwater.
As part of your PADI Open Water Komodo course, you’ll complete two open water training dives and one additional fun dive on the second day. Each session is carefully designed to help you build confidence, perfect your buoyancy, and ensure your safety at every step. The maximum dive depth is 12 meters, and sites are chosen to suit your level and comfort.
You’ve reached the final day of your PADI Open Water Komodo course, and celebration is just around the corner! Your instructor will begin with a detailed dive briefing, outlining the performance skills to complete. On this last training day, you’ll descend to a maximum depth of 18 meters, focusing on refining your techniques across two training dives, followed by an additional fun dive to build confidence and enjoy the incredible marine life of Komodo.
With its rich biodiversity and pelagic encounters, Komodo National Park offers a truly epic setting to conclude your diving journey. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore vibrant coral reefs and swim alongside graceful ocean life the perfect ending to your certification experience.
After resurfacing from your final dive, we’ll head back to Legend Diving Komodo, where your instructor will finalize your certification paperwork and congratulate you on a job well done. As a newly certified diver, you’ll also enjoy an exclusive 10% discount for any continuing education or when visiting any of our other Legend Diving Indonesia centers.

You can scuba dive almost anywhere there’s water deep enough to explore — from swimming pools and lakes to quarries and, of course, the vast ocean. Each environment offers its own unique underwater experience, from calm freshwater dives to thrilling ocean adventures.
Keep in mind that your certification level and diving experience determine which sites you can safely explore. As you gain more skills and confidence, new and more challenging dive locations will open up to you including some of the most breathtaking destinations on the planet.
It’s perfectly normal to feel some discomfort in your ears it’s caused by the change in water pressure as you descend. But don’t worry! With proper training, you’ll learn simple techniques to equalize the pressure and eliminate that pain completely. Once you master this skill, it becomes second nature. If you can fly in an airplane and handle the ear “popping” sensation, then you can definitely dive!
Having a history of ear problems, asthma, diabetes, allergies, or smoking doesn’t automatically mean you can’t dive. However, it’s essential to consult your doctor before starting your scuba journey. A medical professional can assess your specific condition and provide clearance if needed. For extra guidance, your doctor can also contact the Divers Alert Network (DAN) a trusted resource for dive-related health information and safety.
The most common minor issues include seasickness, dehydration, and sunburn — all of which are easily preventable with proper preparation. Occasionally, scrapes or stings can happen, but wearing a wetsuit provides great protection. Overall, scuba diving is a very safe and enjoyable adventure sport when proper guidelines are followed.
Yes, most likely! Komodo National Park is well-known for its beautiful reef sharks, and it’s quite common to spot them during your dives. Don’t worry they’re completely harmless and generally uninterested in divers. Remember, we’re not on their menu!
If you are pregnant, it’s not recommended to scuba dive for safety reasons. However, diving while menstruating is perfectly fine and doesn’t pose any problem underwater.
The maximum depth for recreational scuba diving is 40 meters (130 feet). However, as a PADI Open Water Diver, your depth limit will be 18 meters (60 feet) — plenty deep to explore the incredible marine life and vibrant reefs of Komodo!
Don’t worry — that won’t happen! Every diver’s equipment includes an air pressure gauge that shows exactly how much air you have left. During your PADI Open Water Komodo course, you’ll learn how to monitor your air supply and communicate it with your instructor.
We always end our dives with plenty of air remaining. And just in case of an unlikely emergency, you’ll also learn how to safely share air with your dive buddy — a key skill practiced during your training.
It’s completely normal to feel a bit uneasy at first! That’s why we spend plenty of time in the pool, helping you get used to the equipment and breathing underwater at your own pace.
Your PADI Instructor will never rush you — their goal is to make sure you feel calm, confident, and fully comfortable before moving on to the open ocean.
Absolutely! Certifications from other recognized diving organizations are accepted and can count toward your PADI certification.
Our team will review your current certification and guide you on how to continue your training within the PADI system. For instance, you can be Open Water certified with one organization and then progress to become a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.

We provide all the gear you need for your PADI Open Water Komodo Course and for any additional dives with us. However, we highly recommend owning your mask, fins, and snorkel — they’re lightweight, easy to travel with, and make your dives more enjoyable when they fit you perfectly.
Our team of professional instructors will guide you in choosing the right equipment for your needs. During your course, you’ll get hands-on experience with essential scuba gear, including:
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) – Helps you achieve perfect buoyancy in every situation.

Can’t Complete Your Course? No Problem!
PADI Open Water Komodo — Referral & Upgrade Options
PADI Open Water Referral
If you can’t finish your course at one location, you can still complete your PADI Open Water Komodo certification with us! A referral allows you to continue your training at another dive center without starting over.
For example, if you began your course elsewhere but couldn’t complete it, simply bring your referral form from your previous instructor. Once you arrive at Legend Diving Komodo, our team will assess your progress and help you finish the remaining sessions. Depending on what’s left to complete, it might only take two days leaving you extra time for fun dives in Komodo’s incredible marine world. Don’t forget, if you’re still travelling in Indonesia, you can complete your course in one of our dive center in Bali.
We also offer a wide selection of additional PADI courses if you’d like to keep progressing after certification.
PADI Scuba Diver Upgrade
If you’re already certified as a PADI Scuba Diver, you can easily upgrade to the PADI Open Water Komodo level in just 1.5 days! This upgrade includes completing the remaining theory, confined water sessions, and open water dives giving you full diving freedom to explore down to 18 meters.
Your PADI Open Water Komodo upgrade begins with the theory portion through self-study. You’ll watch a series of training videos and complete the knowledge development sections online before your arrival.
Upon arrival, your instructor will review your completed work, assess your understanding with a quick recap, and answer any questions you may have about the self-study or online forms.
Afterward, it’s time to get in the water! You’ll move to the pool for two confined water sessions, where your instructor will demonstrate and guide you through the new scuba skills until you feel confident and comfortable.
Your final day of the PADI Open Water Komodo upgrade takes you straight to the ocean for two open water dives. Each dive includes specific performance skills designed to refine your confidence and technique underwater.
Once the skills are complete, it’s time to simply enjoy the dive — exploring Komodo’s vibrant marine life and stunning pelagic encounters that make these waters so unique.
After resurfacing, congratulations — you’re now a fully certified PADI Open Water Diver, ready to explore the world’s oceans up to 18 meters deep! And if you’re staying longer in Komodo, we’ll be happy to offer you a 10% discount on any additional dives or continuing education courses.
Referral Course FAQ
Your PADI Open Water referral remains valid for one year from the date it was issued. However, we highly recommend completing your course as soon as possible to keep your diving knowledge and skills fresh ensuring a smoother and more confident continuation when you’re ready to dive again.
No worries! Your original instructor will issue a PADI referral form that details the sections of the course you’ve already completed. You can then bring this form with you and finish your PADI Open Water course anywhere in the world, including right here with us in Komodo, Penida or Lembongan.
Absolutely! Before heading out to the open water, one of our experienced instructors will assess your comfort level and review key skills with you in confined water. You’ll have plenty of time to practice and build confidence at your own pace. We always encourage you to share any questions or concerns — your comfort and safety come first!
An Open Water referral gives you the flexibility to complete your course at your own pace. Everyone learns differently, and sometimes unforeseen circumstances can affect your schedule. With a referral, you won’t feel rushed or pressured — allowing you to fully enjoy the learning experience while gaining confidence and mastering your diving skills.
We recommend getting in touch with us before your arrival at Legend Diving Komodo. It’s also advisable to obtain a medical clearance from your GP beforehand to ensure you’re fit for scuba diving.
